What Is Kyra?
Kyra is a Bengaluru-based auto service designed specifically for women passengers. It connects women who need a ride with women auto drivers, offering an alternative for those who prefer travelling with a woman driver. The service began as a pilot on January 5, using WhatsApp to receive ride requests. A dedicated mobile application is under development, with the aim of making bookings more convenient in the future. How Does the Service Work?
Kyra's initial booking system uses a simple process:- Women passengers request rides through WhatsApp.
- Women auto drivers fulfil the bookings.
- A dedicated mobile app is being developed to support a more convenient booking experience.
Kyra Expands to Mysuru
The initiative has also expanded beyond Bengaluru. Kyra launched in Mysuru on October 1, with more than 53 women auto drivers reportedly available through the service. This expansion highlights the potential for women-led mobility services to grow beyond a single city. It also brings attention to women who are entering a profession traditionally dominated by men.More Than a Ride: Creating Opportunities for Women
Kyra's purpose extends beyond passenger transport. By connecting women passengers with women drivers, the initiative aims to create opportunities for women to earn an income through driving. For women entering the workforce, access to suitable employment can make a meaningful difference to their financial independence. Initiatives like Kyra also bring visibility to women working in occupations where they may be underrepresented. At the same time, women passengers can have another option when choosing how they want to travel. However, a women-only service should complement wider efforts to make public transport and everyday mobility safer for everyone.Kyra and Sakhi: Two Different Initiatives
Kyra is separate from Sakhi, another women-only auto initiative launched in Bengaluru by Krishnavi Parekh. Sakhi initially onboarded 50 women drivers and used a website and WhatsApp to facilitate its service. Although both initiatives focus on women passengers and women drivers, they are separate ventures. Together, they draw attention to the growing conversation around women's mobility, employment and access to transport options that meet their needs. Why Women-Led Mobility Matters
Access to transport affects many parts of a woman's life, including education, employment, healthcare and independence. When women feel more comfortable travelling, it can help them navigate their daily responsibilities with greater confidence. Women-led transport services can also challenge traditional ideas about which jobs women can pursue. Driving an auto-rickshaw requires practical skills, responsibility and knowledge of the roads. Women working in this profession deserve recognition for their work and the opportunities they create for others. While the long-term impact of services like Kyra will depend on factors such as availability, affordability, driver support and reliable operations, the idea offers an additional choice for women seeking transport.A Young Entrepreneur With a Purpose
At 18, Divyashri Patil has introduced an initiative that addresses a real concern for many women while also focusing on women's livelihoods. Kyra's next phase, including the development of its mobile application and its expansion into more cities, will be important to watch. Her initiative is a reminder that meaningful ideas do not always need to begin with a large platform. Sometimes, they start by identifying a problem in everyday life and finding a practical way to address it. For women passengers and aspiring women drivers alike, initiatives such as Kyra invite an important question: how can cities create more transport options that support women's comfort, independence and participation in the workforce? At The yoSHEta, we celebrate ideas and initiatives that bring women's experiences, achievements and opportunities into focus.About The yoSHEta: Real Women. Real Stories. A Stronger Tomorrow.
