Wing Commander (Retd.) Shikha Chaudhary’s journey from the Indian Air Force to running a café in Mumbai is a reminder that sometimes, a new dream begins after years of serving an old one.

A new chapter in a life shaped by service, discipline and determination.
For 14 years, Shikha Chaudhary worked in the Indian Air Force, helping keep helicopters ready for their missions. Her work demanded discipline, precision and a strong sense of responsibility. Today, her world looks very different. Instead of working around aircraft, she is building a business in Mumbai. After retiring from the Air Force, Shikha joined her sister to run Jessiea’s Café in Andheri. From military service to entrepreneurship, the change is significant. But her story is not simply about leaving one profession and choosing another. It is about discovering what comes next when a major chapter of your life comes to an end. And that is something many women can relate to.

A Dream Changed. Her Determination Did Not.

As a young woman, Shikha dreamed of becoming a pilot or an actor. She cleared the examinations required for a pilot career but could not meet the height requirements. For some people, such a setback might have meant giving up on the larger dream altogether. Shikha chose another route. With a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering, she entered the technical branch of the Indian Air Force and trained as an aeronautical engineer. Her original plan did not work out as expected. But she found another way to serve in the field she wanted to be part of.
Sometimes, life does not give us the opportunity we imagined. It gives us a different opportunity, and we have to decide what to do with it.
Shikha’s early career was an example of that choice.

Fourteen Years of Responsibility

Her years in the Indian Air Force were not just about a job title. She worked in demanding operational environments, including postings in Srinagar, Bagdogra and Bastar. Her responsibilities included helping maintain helicopter readiness for important missions. During the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir floods, the Indian Air Force participated in rescue and relief operations. Keeping aircraft operational was part of the wider effort to support those missions. These experiences called for careful planning, teamwork and the ability to handle pressure. People may see a helicopter flying on a mission without knowing how many people worked behind the scenes to make that flight possible. Shikha was part of that responsibility. After 14 years of service, she entered another phase of life. This time, the challenge was not keeping aircraft ready for missions. It was building something of her own.

From Military Discipline to Café Management

Starting a business after a long career in the armed forces means learning a different way of working. A café may look like a simple place where people meet for coffee and food. Behind the scenes, however, there are daily decisions about operations, customer experience, staff, expenses and quality. Shikha brought years of professional experience into this new environment. But experience alone does not make every transition easy. A business has its own problems, and working with a private team can be different from working within a military organisation. She had to adapt, learn and understand the demands of her new profession. That is an important part of her story. We often celebrate the moment someone starts a business. We talk less about the adjustments, the learning and the everyday work required to keep it running. Entrepreneurship is not just about being your own boss. It is also about accepting responsibility for decisions that may not always go as planned.

Jessiea’s Café: A New Chapter in Mumbai

Shikha joined hands with her sister to build Jessiea’s Café in Andheri, Mumbai. The café offers customers a place to enjoy food and spend time together. Its concept also includes creative activities and workshops, making the experience about more than simply ordering a meal. For Shikha, this is a different kind of professional mission. Her previous career involved technical responsibilities and operational readiness. Her present work brings her into the world of hospitality, customer relationships and business development. The two professions are different, but both require commitment. There is something meaningful about choosing to build a new identity after spending years in a demanding career. Shikha is no longer defined only by her military uniform. She is also an entrepreneur working towards her own vision.

A Woman Does Not Have to Remain the Same Forever

There is a question many women quietly carry: Is it too late to start something new? Sometimes, it comes after years in a job. Sometimes, after raising children or putting personal ambitions aside. Sometimes, it appears when the life we planned begins to look different from the life we are living. Shikha’s journey offers a simple perspective. A person’s previous experience does not disappear when they change careers. The skills, lessons and understanding gained over the years can become part of what they build next. But every new beginning requires work. A business needs planning, financial responsibility, patience and the willingness to learn things from scratch. There is no guarantee that every career change will lead to success. What matters is recognising that a different direction can still be worth exploring. Women do not have to limit themselves to one professional identity for their entire lives. A woman can serve in the armed forces and later become an entrepreneur. She can be experienced in one field and still be a beginner in another. Both can be true at the same time.

Her Next Mission

Shikha has expressed ambitions to grow Jessiea’s beyond a single café and develop it into a chain. That goal will bring its own challenges. Expanding a business requires more than a good idea; it calls for systems, consistency, financial planning and the ability to maintain quality as the business grows. Her journey has already crossed an important boundary: she has moved from a structured military career into the uncertain but potentially rewarding world of entrepreneurship. Her story reminds us that retirement does not have to mean the end of ambition. It can also create room for a new one.

The yoSHEta Takeaway

Shikha Chaudhary’s story is not about proving that everyone should leave a stable career and start a business. It is about something more personal.
You are allowed to begin again, even after spending years becoming someone in a completely different world.
Your past is not wasted because your future looks different. The discipline you learned, the responsibilities you carried and the challenges you faced can all become part of your next journey. Shikha spent 14 years helping keep aircraft ready for their missions. Today, she is working towards a different ambition, one built around her own business. The uniform may have changed. The work may have changed. But the willingness to take responsibility for what comes next remains an important part of the journey. Sometimes, you do not need to have your entire future figured out before taking the next step. Sometimes, you only need to be ready to begin.
